Yup. That's what it says. Vagina.
I went to see a performance of the Vagina Monologues this afternoon. What prompted me was a friend of mine from work was acting in it. It was on her "to do before I die list" and I was going to support her. Anyone knocking things off their list...deserves support. It was also to raise money for the Rape Crisis Center of Rochester and to honor National V Day. A day created to recognize the need to end violence against women and girls.
Anyway, it was fantastic. I had seen Eve Ensler's HBO special years ago and was blown away by it. It is a funny, touching, real look at our most precious body part and women's experiences. both good and bad. I encourage everyone to see it. I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea but give it a try.
One thought I had - in raising a daughter, I have one of the most important roles of my lifetime. I have the opportunity to teach her that her body is not bad. Her body is beautiful and to teach her to feel good about herself. To teach her that respect is the most important thing anyone can give you and to teach her that her body is just that...hers! I might even use words like vagina...why is that the only body part we are raised having an alternate name for anyway? Mine was a tweeter. Says something huh?
It was a great way to spend an afternoon. Thinking about and appreciating my vagina! (for all you who are freaked out by the word here is alternative read...It was a great way to spend an afternoon. Thinking and appreciating my being a woman.)
